The Life of an Inspiring 85-Year-Old Change Maker! | Something Beautiful for the World

Is there an age at which you stop being an activist for change? Not according to Helen Dew!
In fact, Helen’s activism didn’t even begin until she was in her 60s. Back then, she was introduced to a woman who was campaigning to change the fragile and problematic global financial system. When Helen understood what the issues were, she realised, “Now I know what to do with my life.”
Our money system is integral to how we live our lives and the impact we have on each other and our planet. A lifelong gardener and an innately frugal child of the Great Depression, the concept of living simply is second nature to Helen. But as the world around her has become less and less ‘simple’ her passion has grown ever greater to educate her community about why we benefit from growing our own food, saving our own seeds, taking care of our water and other resources - and how all of these things are linked to the money system that dominates and impacts our lives.
For Helen, a key element in building personal and community resilience is in building quality soil. From making biochar for her compost to petitioning the local council to create a natural burial park, she has worked tirelessly in so many ways to contribute to her community and to the planet. She is truly Something Beautiful for the World!

A group of us Greens in London in the 80’s-90’s used to wear T.Shirts with written on them in big letters from top to bottom, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle(the 4 R’s ). Living like this is also a very social lifestyle where people cooperate which becomes mutually beneficial, so building local & regional communities & networks. The real (R)evolution! 🌻🌎✊🏽

Loved the video. It made me feel a bit more hopeful about the future. I do what i can myself and it pains me big time to see the amount of plastic on people's everyday life. I've seen so called "green" people going to a meeting with plastic bottles. Lots of people don't want to hear or bother to understand why it is so important. It frustrates me no end. Some recycle because they have to, others refuse to wash the containers because its gross and they tell you they are doing enough by recycling and someone else will wash it. If i go to the supermarket, i buy the veg that are not packaged and refuse to buy meat there. I go to the butcher with a container. I am lucky there's a wonderful person near by who sells organic products by weight or units, where you bring your containers and fill them up. We live in a world where no matter how much you try, you will do something not fully good or right. If we just try to minimise those, we will have taken a huge step forward. The mentalities have to change a lot still. You are truly inspiring ❤

Just an update on my comment 5 years ago. Friends of ours who had an incredible permaculture urban farm hit a massive financial wall when the wife became critically ill. Since we live in regional Queensland they had to relocate to Brisbane, so she could get the treatment she needed and her husband could care for her. Brisbane is a nine hour drive from where we live. They had problems selling this beautiful productive urban farm. There weren't enough like minded people in our local area who were interested in purchasing it, so they had to sell at a much reduced price, as they needed the money to relocate as quickly as possible. Unfortunately as far as I know this block has been returned to being a "normal" urban block and the are now living in a "normal" urban house in Brisbane. So sad. Royce.

I was forced to live in ABJECT POVERTY (not by choice!) Im a recycler and permaculture queen but I’ve DONE MY TIME living like that. Good on them, but my history and trauma mean that I will never chose to live a stark life. Nope. Not for me. Good on you being so ‘lucky’ to chose to live like a pauper. What a bizarre concept 😐

Thing is they live in a place where they're more able to make good choices. We, for instance, live in the boonies and the co-ops where you can refill bottles, etc. are far away.

I am SO disappointed by the mention of 'we need animals'. You do NOT need cattle to have a healthy ecosystem - they can live freely on your land, but we have enough of wild animals to help sustain the ecosystem. Vegan, regenerative food forests do just fine without 'traditional cattle', do NOT use this as an excuse to continue to raise animals for meat - this is such an excuse.

The biggers compromise on Urban cultural sustainability has been the fear based food culture designed by large corporate supermarkets. Coming from an area within Sydney and growing up around many cultures from the diverse parts of Europe I thankfully have been educated on the fruits of one's labour in our own backyards. What a wonderful and inspiring transformation they have accomplished in such a small space with Quail eggs to boot.
